"They can lower prices on the Razr and other phones do not make a difference," said Snyder.
Motorola also said it expects to report net profit of 13 cents to 16 cents per share, below the domestic predictability compiled at the beginning of the quarter. The forecast includes 10 cents per share in special expenses, such as investment-related losses, actions based on the costs and the cost of extra taxes.
Analysts on average were forecasting a fourth-quarter revenue of $ 11.99 billion and net income of 38 cents per share, before special items, according to Reuters Estimates. A shortcut can also stem from demand in emerging markets like China and India but less strength in western Europe and the United States, Snyder said. Free Cell Phone Service For Low Income Residents
Posted on August 17, 2008

Tennessee is the first state in the nation to provide free wireless phone service to its low-income residents. Prepaid cell phone provider TracFone Wireless Inc. announced Friday that it’s launching its SafeLink Wireless program in Tennessee. SafeLink provides eligible low-income households with a cell phone, access to emergency services and 68 minutes of free air time for up to a year. The Federal Communications Commission recently authorized TracFone to provide SafeLink, the company’s version of the federal program Lifeline. Other carriers are certified to use Lifeline, but they provide discounts on wireless service, rather than free service. Jose Fuentes, director of government relations for SafeLink Wireless, said the program will aid more than 800,000 low-income households in Tennessee.

The effect of cellular phone use upon driver attention.
McKnight AJ, McKnight AS.

National Public Services Research Institute, Landover, MD 20785. In this study, 150 subjects observed a 25-minute video driving sequence containing 45 highway traffic situations to which they were expected to respond by manipulation of simulated vehicle controls. Each situation occurred under five conditions of distraction: placing a cellular phone call, carrying on a causal cellular phone conversation, carrying on an intense cellular phone conversation, tuning a radio, and no distraction. All of the distractions led to significant increases in the proportion of situations to which subjects failed to respond. However, significant age differences of nonresponse appeared. Among subjects over age 50, nonresponses increased by about one-third under all of the telephone distractions. The response rate of younger subjects increased by a lesser degree except under intense conversation. Results were not influenced by gender or prior experience with cellular phones. The authors conclude that older drivers might reduce their accident risk during attention-demanding traffic conditions by avoiding use of cellular phones and that other drivers might do so by refraining from calls involving intense conversation.

Vt. settlement clears way for Verizon’s Unicel acquisition
June 11, 2008

By Bruce Edwards Rutland Herald

The two largest cellular phone companies in the state will divest their overlapping service territories under an antitrust settlement announced Tuesday. Verizon Wireless and Rural Cellular Corp., which does business as Unicel, reached an agreement with the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Justice that will allow Verizon Wireless to move forward with its previously announced $2.67 billion purchase of the smaller cellular phone company, which operates in 15 states. The settlement and Verizon’s purchase of Unicel still requires the approval of the Federal Communications Commission. Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell said in a statement that "maintaining competition in this market is vitally important to the overall economic health of our state." Sorrell said requiring Verizon and Unicel to find a competitor to enter the Vermont market "will ensure that consumers continue to enjoy the benefits of competition in the cell phone market." ***

download it to the cell phone

Someday, I want to come up with an idea like this and make a bunch of money off of it, even if I do give away the product. A company has made the Shaquille O’Neal R-rated rap about Kobe Bryant available as a ring tone. Rest assured that would get your cell phone noticed in a hurry. Just don’t let it ring in church, which, by the way, you shouldn’t do no matter what your ring tone is. Shaq’s profane rap can be seen at YouTube. We’d put the link on here, but you probably can get there faster on your favorites panel.
Starting tomorrow, U.S. consumers can take part in this Shaq-Kobe feud and make Shaq’s rap their ringtone. FunMobility has Shaq’s original rap as a free download, as well as a premium ringtone mashup of the original rap and a JibJab-style animation with the mashup soundtrack. If you know what all that means, more power to you. The Shaq rap ringtones can be downloaded for free now at FunMo.com.**

Rising prices put pressure on texting, phone calls

Monday, April 28, 2008

By Darwin G. Amojelar, Reporter

More Filipinos are expected to own cellular phone units this year, but higher food prices are expected to reduce their spending for calls and text messaging.

“There may be some slowdown in the C, D and E markets,” Edgardo Cabarios, National Telecommunications Commission department director, said. He added that the limited disposable income in this segment will be spent on food.

He said the best way for telecom companies to recover lost revenues from the mass market is to offer a pricing scheme or services that will target the more affluent—those belonging to A, B and upper C socio-economic brackets, as they are likely to have disposable incomes.

But despite higher inflation, the commission official said he sees the number of mobile phone subscribers growing by five million to 10 million this year.

The government earlier reported that inflation rose 6.4 percent in March owing to higher food and oil prices. For this year, the Development and Budget Coordinating Committee projects an inflation rate of 3 percent to 5 percent.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) recorded 30 million subscribers last year, with units Smart Communications Inc. registering 20.3 million users and Piltel, 9.7 million. Globe Telecom Inc.’s subscribers stood at 20.3 million and Sun Cellular’s, more than 5.5 million.

Protect yourself from cell phone-emitted radiation

At Safewireless.com, we believe that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a
pound of cure when it comes to cell phones and your health. While it is commonly
understood that it is dangerous to stand too close to the microwave while it is
cooking, or sit too close to the T.V., we think nothing of talking for long periods of
time on our cell phones. While this is a relatively recent concern, several news
reports have surfaced that, if nothing else, will make you question the complete safety
of your cell phone.

A former Quebec couple has scored a key legal victory for cellphone customers after a judge ruled they were duped into signing three-year contracts with Telus Mobility Inc. with a misleading promotion.

The State would try to admit cellphone audio and video recordings in the drunk driving trial of Pretoria High Court judge Nkola Motata being heard in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Thursday.

The recordings were made by Richard James Baird, into whose wall Motata crashed.

Baird recorded them on his cellphone and then copied them onto a computer.

They were placed on a memory stick, then downloaded onto his attorney's computer. The information was then placed on a CD which was given to prosecutor Zaais van Zyl.

Baird told the court that the copy was made by his attorney in his presence.

The cellphone he used was now broken.

The court adjourned again for another 10 minutes, barely half an hour after the previous adjournment, during which equipment to show the contents of the CD was being set up.

Before the adjournment the State had indicated that its intention was firstly to allow Baird to confirm that the CD was the one that he had given Van Zyl, and then to show the contents of the CD.

The judge is facing a charge of driving under the influence of liquor or drugs with an alternative count of reckless and negligent driving and a charge of defeating the ends of justice with an alternative charge of resisting arrest relating to accident in Hurlingham, Johannesburg on January 6.

Earlier the court ruled that a copy of hand written personal details Motata provided after the accident was not admissible and that the original should be found. - Sapa

Alternatively that part of the perimeter fence in line with the nearest
cellphone tower could include wire mesh (I think that it would be 1/2

cellphones in the sheltered area would be useless. End of problem.

Analog vs. digital cellular phones

Cellular phones are an amazing modern convenience, but it can be confusing for consumers to distinguish between the various options available. There are two main types of cellular phones: analog and digital. Each type operates slightly differently and has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

The first cellular phones were analog phones. Analog phones are basically an extremely sophisticated radio and telephone combination. The main advantage of analog cellular phones is that they cost less than the newer digital phones. Analog phones are also a better choice for travelers, since 95 percent of the county is equipped for their use. The drawbacks of choosing an analog phone are the reduced sound quality and the slightly higher per minute rate.

Digital cellular phones use the same basic technology as an analog phone. The difference is that digital phones use binary code and compression to fit more calls into a given bandwidth. Digital cellular phones offer longer battery life, better signals, and cheaper calling rates. The main disadvantage of digital cellular phones is that many parts of the country arent equipped with the proper antennae to receive digital signals. This makes digital cellular phones inappropriate for frequent travelers or individuals who live in rural areas.

Sprint often uses the term PCS in their promotional materials. PCS stands for Personal Communications Service and is a wireless communications service very similar to cellular phone services. Many people use the term PCS as a synonym for a digital cellular phone, but a true PCS phone offers additional services such as caller ID, paging, and e-mail as part of its regular phone service.

Newer cellular phone models may offer a dual mode feature. This option allows you to automatically switch between analog and digital modes depending upon what antennae are in your range. Dual mode phones combine the advantages of both analog and digital cellular phones.

Offering twice the run-time of batteries and with recharge times on the order of 10 minutes, Angstrom's EverOn capability promises to supplant the lithium ion batteries commonly used in today's portable electronic devices.

Angstrom has announced a global first with the completion of a six-month test of fully integrated fuel cell-powered mobile devices. This revolutionary power platform was successfully integrated into MOTOSLVR L7 handsets for the trial, with no modification to the outside dimensions of the devices. The trial devices did not rely on the use of any battery - instead, they drew power from Angstrom's Micro Hydrogen platform, which is comprised of a novel fuel cell architecture, innovative micro-fluidics and a revolutionary refillable hydrogen storage tank. Angstrom has demonstrated research results showing twice the talk-time of the equivalent batterypowered devices in side-by-side testing.

Angstrom is currently collaborating with world-leading battery manufacturers, portable electronic device makers and mobile service providers towards the commercialization of its Micro Hydrogen technology.

"As consumer demand for smartphones and multimedia devices grows, so does the need for efficient powering solutions that help enable 'always on' experiences." said Jerry Hallmark, Manager, Energy System Technologies, Motorola Mobile Devices business. "Motorola is working with Angstrom to develop fuel cell technology that will support the increasing energy demands of next generation devices."

The commercialization of Angstrom's technology reached another milestone on November 16th, 2007, when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) created new regulations that will permit Angstrom Power's devices to be transported globally in the passenger cabin of commercial aircraft. Final approval is expected before the regulations take effect in January 2009. With approval from Transport Canada, which preceded the ICAO regulations, Angstrom products have already made more than 60 commercial flights to date.

Stuart Robinson, Director of Handset Component Technologies at Strategy Analytics Ltd, commented, "Our research shows that insufficient battery run time ranks as one of the leading considerations in the adoption of handheld devices with rich multimedia functionality. Development of Lithium batteries is too slow to meet the growing energy demands of cellular handsets. Angstrom's achievement, the world's first successful integration of micro fuel cell technology into a standard mobile handset, demonstrates the potential of micro fuel cells to provide a better solution for demanding mobile energy applications." The addressable market for Angstrom's technology is estimated to exceed a billion units annually by 2010. cell phone
