"Not everyone has a cell phone," said Aase M. Jones, assistant administrator of the city Tisbury John Bugbee. He said that when Verizon was planning to turn off the phone at the top of the hill in the Park and Ride, the town selectmen decided to pay 85 U.S. dollars a month to maintain it.

"They used to pay us so they can install phones. We have a commission," said Ms. Jones. But those days are longer. Now, the telephone company charges cities and businesses for not paying income-producing phones when they can.

Mrs Jones has a file with letters from Verizon describing the plan to eliminate unprofitable phones. Condlin quickly responded with a letter asking the company to reconsider. He said that the station is not open 24 hours a day.
