You do not have a cell phone? Good luck to find a public phone

By ALAN LOVEWELL mark

Tisbury Verizon pays to keep your phone in the Park and Ride. The disappearance of the phones around the island has raised concerns of public safety in Tisbury and Edgartown.
In Tisbury, city officials paid a monthly fee to maintain a public phone working in the park something remote and Park and Ride near the town water tower.

When the phone was removed from in front of the Edgartown police station this fall, within the bureau has had to rethink how the public comes to the police after hours, when one is not in the station.

The Chappaquiddick There once was a phone in the Chappy Ferry hut, and now it's gone. Other public phones are disappearing around the vineyard.

The phone industry is being lost due to lack of customers. The reason is, of course, cellular phones. However, cell phones do not always work and its ubiquitous appearance can be misleading.

"Not everyone has a cell phone," said Aase M. Jones, assistant administrator of the city Tisbury John Bugbee. He said that when Verizon was planning to turn off the phone at the top of the hill in the Park and Ride, the town selectmen decided to pay 85 U.S. dollars a month to maintain it.

"They used to pay us so they can install phones. We have a commission," said Ms. Jones. But those days are longer. Now, the telephone company charges cities and businesses for not paying income-producing phones when they can.

Mrs Jones has a file with letters from Verizon describing the plan to eliminate unprofitable phones. Verizon Edgartown when he wrote in February 2002, with his plan to eliminate the pay phone in front of the police station, police chief Paul V. Condlin quickly responded with a letter asking the company to reconsider. He said that the station is not open 24 hours a day.

"It is my conviction that the elimination of the pay phone outside our station could delay or hinder a citizen reporting an emergency or seek medical care," wrote the head.
